Ingrown toenails, also known as onychocrytosis, is a condition where a portion of the toenail grows into the surrounding tissue. A common occurrence of ingrown toenails is on the big toe (hallux). There are many causes of ingrown toenails. How your nails grows in terms of direction or shape can cause an ingrown toenail, this can be due to how the nail was cut or genetics. Injury to the toenail can cause the nail to embed itself and grow into the skin. Ill fitting or tight shoes can also push the nail into the surrounding tissue. Ingrown toenails can be painful, ranging from mild to severe and they can be accompanied by redness, swelling and leaking fluid.
