Ingrown toenails, also known as onychocrytosis, is a condition where a portion of the toenail grows into the surrounding tissue. A common occurrence of ingrown toenails is on the big toe (hallux). Injury to the toenail can cause the nail to embed itself and grow into the skin. Ill fitting or tight shoes can also push the nail into the surrounding tissue.
